PECKETT POWERED PACIFICS
Whether big powerful pacifics or pretty little Pecketts are your thing, then this is the video for you. There's even a famous 9F and a clapped out K1 featured for good measure.
Neville Grove would have offered a train spotters paradise had it been a real 1:1 location back in steam days. Trains hurtle by if stood on the low level station and thunder overhead whilst light engines clank back and forth between the coal drop and the engine shed which is only a stones throw from Platform 4.
However, all locos in this video are recent Ready to Run OO Gauge releases by @HornbyModelRailways Each has been weathered in the Neville Grove studio to make these excellent models even better. What engines can you spot?

CUSTOM WEATHERED GWR IN OO GAUGE: Copper Caps & Brass Bonnets

The Great Western Railway is close to my heart for many reasons, not least because of the age old cliche that it reminds me of childhood summer holidays (albeit in the preservation era to the Severn Valley and West Somerset Railways), but also because GWR locos always sound so good! To help combat the UK's midwinter blues, here is a succession of custom weathered GW models running through Nevil...

In the electric corner is @HornbyModelRailways 91002 "Durham Cathedral" whizzing through Neville Grove in both "push" and "pull" modes with a matching rake of Mk4 coaches and DVT. The brand new Rails of Sheffield / Heljan Class 45 is a mightily impressive model in stature, detail, accuracy and build quality and these 2 also proved to be silky smooth and strong operators when pressed into service on fast Neville Grove expresses. Amazing to think that when these Derby / Sulzer type 4’s were introduced in 1962 with British Railways they would have rubbed shoulders with pre-...

Having g looked at these videos again they really are not bad looking .They have their own place along with the A2/2 in Eastern Region design tree.I have a fleet of exLNER pacifics and these really stand out as well as compliment my Gresley and Peppercorn designs. I wish someone would bring our a B2 now

I actually like them contrary to all the negative comments over the years they were a design out of necessity to standardise and update without these they may not have git Peppercorns A1 and A2 .having an A2/2 in my fleet as well they have grown on me . And offer something different and are a major link to the LNER family of pacific locomotives well done Mr Thompson.

In 4mm I bought when available and very cheaply the Ian Kirk LNER kits. Some were shortened fairly easily to get the GE system length. I used a light matt brown and mahogany wood stain for the overcoat. I could represnt older scumble being darker and also do some lighter panel sections where Doncaster had treated the woodwork only partially.

I'm curious to learn why, given the extreme austerity built into these locomotives, they still went for inside cylinders? It seems external cylinders would've been far easier to maintain and they certainly had room for them! Also, can anyone tell me a bit about the eccentric rod on the locomotive's driver's side? -curious from Los Angeles. Thx all!

Our Spirit of Progress in 1937 may not have been quite as fast as these two expresses, but it was designed to race the Melbourne-Albury Victorian Railways sector of the Melbourne to Sydney Express. The New South Wales train took over for Albury-Sydney necessitating a change of trains as the Spirit ran on Irish gauge and the NSW express on standard gauge. The Spirit was an all-steel, streamlined air-conditioned express pulled by a Victorian S class engine with the same power as a Princess Coronation. Her cars were more streamlined and American than the British carriages, with First and Second Class seating, a restaurant and boat tail observation and lounge car. NSW also had an all steel, airconditioned, diesel express, both of these trains the first in the Empire. ua-cam.com/video/sEv7FbglxzE/v-deo.html (Sorry the video is stretched - the train was narrower and taller than it appears in the video)

I also just bought Dominion of Canada today on sale so now have all Coronation locos ready for when Hornby release the Gresley Coronation sets. The icing on the cake is at 3:15 on your video with the double flight of stairs to the platform as I need to do similar on mine as am trying to replicate Burton on Trent in the 60s...😉 What are the kits you used to do them? I see many fantastic layouts on Y.T., but they are ruined, for me, by running trains at breakneck speed. Thankyou so much for such a smooth operation done at the 'proper' scale speed, so realistic. You've made an old fool very happy.

The headcode on the 7F is incorrect, the fireman's side lamp should be on top of the smokebox door and the driver's side above the buffer. That was the S&D express headcode. Otherwise it is a superb video, just like all the others.

SPOILT BY UNREALISTIC TRAIN FORMATIONS !!! Nice layout, but I do wish modellers today would do a little more research into operational rules & regulations ! The restrictions on coaches & wagons as to what could be coupled to what, and in what order. Means some of the trains seen here would not have been seen in the real world !!! Type 1 = GWR & LMS coaching stock had "Screwlink" couplings extended buffers & BSS type gangways ! Type 2 = LNER, SR, BR & Pullman coaches had Buckeye auto couplers, retractable buffers & Pullman gangways. The two types could not normally be coupled to each other, unless special adaptor plates were fitted to the Type 1 BSS gangway ends, so as to allow them to couple to Type 2 !!! Freight is a much bigger issue, as there were hundreds of rules concerning wagon types, their brakes, and the products they carried, affecting what position they had to be marshalled in, in any freight train formation. BR owned wagons, when painted pale grey, indicates they are "unfitted" so had NO train brake, only a handbrake. BR wagons painted red oxide (reddish brown) had Vacuum train brakes, so were known as "fitted" wagons. As did white refrigerated vans, and anything marked XP. Therefore, "Fitted" wagons with vacuum brakes had to be coupled behind the locomotive, so the loco could control their brakes. While "unfitted" pale grey wagons had to be coupled behind any "fitted" ones, and of course a brakevan had to be the last vehicle in the train. Wagons marked XP (Express Passenger) were "fitted" types that could be included in Passenger trains. Although that limited train speed to 60mph, and no more than 3 such vehicles were allowed. So freight vehicles in passenger trains were usually found included only in local branch trains or mainline stopping trains. Vehicles such as Milk tanks & Horse boxes were NOT part of the wagon fleet, but actually part of the passenger fleet, and could travel in passenger trains, or special trains made up solely of such vehicles. There were numerous long distance overnight MILK trains, that often ran as Class 3 (Parcels & ECS) trains, so took precedence over classes 4 to 0. Heavy wagons such as Cranes and certain special heavy load wagons, (all of which were vacuum braked) had to travel directly behind the locomotive, to avoid problems of light weight empty wagons derailing, if such heavy wagons were marshalled further back in the train ! Hazardous loads, such as Gunpowder or Petroleum tank wagons, obviously had to be kept apart by ensuring at least 3 wagons not carrying hazardous loads were in between ! All these complex restrictions & many more not mentioned, explain why shunting had to occur at virtually every Goods Yard, Marshalling Yard or Freight Depot. Hence there were thousands of "Shunting" locos in Britain. Indeed just the GWR 57xx 0-6-0PT fleet of over 800 locos was primarily aimed at shunting and quite powerful as Class 4F !!
